Most coatings which are solvent based and made from petrochemicals, emerged over the past century, and have proven extremely effective at protecting and extending the life of infrastructures and consumer goods. Many manufacturers are committed to fighting global pollution and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) put forth by the United Nations, including the reduction of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. These sustainability targets present a great challenge since eco-friendly alternatives do not perform as effectively as traditional coatings.
